Western Literature Week Eleven-Oedipus the King

A. Before Formal Class
a. How to Take Great Notes

(a) Write Conclusion-- Hand-writing can't write down many things in time.
(b) Make Connection
(c) Review -- to recap
>> Why do we have to type or rewrite the note?
Notes are better and we can review what we've learnt again.
b. Three tragedy authors-- Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides

B. Quizzes Discussion

Topic One-- Agamemnon (play) (Quiz)

a. Aegisthus-- He is Agamemnon's cousin (his uncle's son) and Aegisthus had a love affair with Clytemnestra who is Agamemnon's wife. The Crown of Atreus should belong to Aegisthus' family initially but Agamemnon's father took it away.
 Aegithus and Clytemnestra
b. Orestes-- Because Clytemnestra murdered Agamemnon, their son, Orestes, and their another daughter, Electra, killed Clytemnestra together. After that, they was chased by the goddess of revenge, Furies. Athena held a court for them ultimately.

* 在律法裡講文明,從寬容中說歷史─導讀導讀馬里歐•普佐的《終極教父》-- Dr. T. Sara Sun

>> It's quite ironic that Lady Justice (Goddess of Justice) holds a sword and a scale on her hands and got blind by a piece of cloth.

Topic Two-- Oedipus the King (Play) (Quiz)

>> The play is an example of a classic tragedy, noticeably containing an emphasis on how Oedipus's own faults contribute to the tragic hero's downfall, as opposed to having fate be the sole cause.
a. It's a story of House of Thebes.
* Tiresias is a Thebes prophet who was famous for being transformed into a woman for seven years.
b. Oedipus' real father was King Laius and he got adopted by the King Polybus of Corinth who was the king of the country (Corinth) which is next to Thebes.

c.  Jocasta announced if someone can answer Sphinx's riddle (the monster who guarded the country in front of the country gate), she's willing to rule Thebes with the one. Oedipus did it and married Jocasta eventually.
c. Riddle of Sphinx-- Because Oedipus wanted to get into Thebes, he had to answer Sphinx's riddle.

"What is that which in the morning goeth upon four feet; upon two feet in the afternoon; and in the Evening upon three?"
 Oedipus and Jocasta

* Oedipus at Colonus-- It is one of the three Theban plays of the Athenian tragedian Sophocles.  The play describes the end of Oedipus' tragic life. Legends differ as to the site of Oedipus' death; Sophocles set the place at Colonus, a village near Athens and also Sophocles' own birthplace, where the blinded Oedipus has come with his daughters Antigone and Ismene as suppliants of the Erinyes and of Theseus, the king of Athens.
>> Antigone-- Because King Creon forbade anybody to bury Antigone's brother, Isemene, Antigone grabbed a handle of soil and put on Isemene's dead body. After doing that, she was imprisoned in a grave. Meanwhile, Creon's son, Haemon fell in love with Antigone but Creon disagree to release her. Therefore, Haemon ended his life due to his fury.

Benson's Flipped Classroom (葉丙成教授 翻轉教室)-- He films his online video for every course every week. Student would watch the videos in their spare time due to their care on grade. They go to the real classroom for only asking questions and discussion.
>> Student would care about their grades because they care what they could learn and how they could improve themselves. If they didn't care, even you want to let them all pass, they would still ignore this information.
